Vang maintains lead as county cures ballots

The results of the southwest Fresno City Council race will not be finalized until the end of next week.

Fresno City Council candidate Brandon Vang slightly expanded his lead in the race for Fresno City Council District 5, according to the latest update from the Fresno County Elections Office on Wednesday.

If the results hold through the end of next week, Vang will win the seat outright and avoid a runoff election.

Where the results stand: Vang, a Sanger Unified trustee, leads the race at 50.16%, just above the 50% plus one margin needed to win outright.

  • Fresno Unified trustee Elizabeth Jonasson Rosas is at 34.98%.
  • They are followed by Jose Barraza at 12.31%, Paul Condon at 2.31% and write-in candidate Nickolas Wildstar at 0.24%.
  • Vang picked up 22 votes since last week, seven more than Jonasson picked up to increase his percentage share by 0.02 points.

What we’re watching: Fresno County will provide its next update on April 4, which is when County Clerk and Registrar of Voters James Kus is required to certify the election.

  • The county said there are around 130 ballots that could still be counted through the curing process. That requires voters who received signature cure letters to return those to the county in order for their ballots to count.
