Southeast Fresno has a new affordable housing complex that is part of the growing Fancher Creek area.
City and county officials were on-site on Monday for the ribbon cutting for Sarah’s Court.
The big picture: Sarah’s Court brings 120 units of affordable rental units to southeast Fresno, ranging from one to three bedrooms per unit.
- The complex is located southeast of Belmont and Clovis Avenues at 200 N. Salma Ave. It is part of the Fancher Creek Town Center Masterplan developed by Lance Kashian & Company.
Flashback: Two years ago the City of Fresno approved a $6.5 million loan over 55 years with a 3% interest rate to secure state housing credits to support the project.
What we’re watching: Sarah’s Court will eventually offer an additional 120 units of affordable housing as part of the second phase of the project.
- A new Target is already under construction at the Fancher Creek center, with In-N-Out, Sprouts, Petsmart and Michaels signed on to move in as well.
What they’re saying: “It’s no secret that we are in a housing crisis in America today, and Fresno is not immune to that… It didn’t happen overnight,” Mayor Jerry Dyer said at a press conference Monday. “It’s been decades in the making where we had an increased demand for housing and we had a decrease in the supply. And that was exacerbated at different times, but certainly during COVID when a lot of people decided to relocate to Fresno, which really intensified the demand that we saw in Fresno.
- Dyer continued, “So as a result, not only do we have a shortage of housing, we have an increased cost in housing. When you combine that with some of the energy costs that we see and the inflation that we experience, it’s no wonder that people out there are having to make some very difficult choices. So we need housing.”
- Fresno County Supervisor Luis Chavez added, “We have housing, we have shopping, but we have something also special in this community that we’re going to be working on to make sure that it materializes all the way through.”
