Former Fresno County Supervisor Doug Vagim dies at 81

Vagim, a Fresno native, was a longtime figure in local politics.

Former Fresno County Supervisor Doug Vagim died on Oct. 20 at the age of 81. 

His family said he passed away peacefully in his sleep in his childhood home. 

Vagim was born in Fresno on Feb. 22, 1943 and attended Heaton Elementary School, Washington Junior High School, Fresno High School and Fresno State. 

After marrying his wife Becky, Vagim was hired as a programmer at Alphameric Data Processing before entering politics. 

Vagim served as a county supervisor from 1989 to 1996.

His service on the board overlapped with his position on the California Air Resources Board, where he served from 1994 to 1997. 

Vagim also ran for Fresno Mayor in 2008 and 2016, but he did not advance out of the primary either time. 

He is survived by his wife Becky, daughter Stephanie, grandson Elliot, brother Ed, sister-in-law Nancy, niece Tami, nephew Derek, great nephews Paul and Austin, sister-in-law Debbie, brother-in-law Jim, nephew Josh, great niece Madison and many cousins. 

Visitation will be held on Oct. 29 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Yost and Webb Funeral Home, with a graveside service to follow at Belmont Memorial Park on Oct. 30 at 10:30 a.m.
