Assembly supports bill to bring UC medical school to Kern County

Asm. Jasmeet Bains has successfully pushed the bill through the Assembly.

The California Assembly has supported a bill to bring a University of California medical school campus to Kern County.

Wednesday, the Assembly approved Assembly Bill 2357, authored by Asm. Jasmeet Bains (D–Delano) with no opposition, sending it to the Senate.

The big picture: AB 2357 would create an endowment in the State Treasury to allow funding sources to contribute to the medical school’s funding.

  • Once the funding requirements are met, the University of California would be required to build the medical school.

What they’re saying: “A medical school will provide the catalyst we need to improve healthcare access for one of California’s most medically underserved areas from medical professionals with roots in the San Joaquin Valley,” Bains said on the Assembly floor.
