Atwater correctional officer charged with assault, obstruction of justice

The correctional officer is accused of falsifying a report and could spend decades behind bars if convicted.

A correctional officer in Atwater has been charged with assaulting an inmate and obstruction of justice. 

The big picture: Sandra Manugay, 42, faces charges over her work as a Senior Correctional Officer at the United State Penitentiary, Atwater. 

  • On Nov. 2, 2023, Munagay allegedly struck an inmate housed at the federal prison and also falsified a report about the incident. 

What we’re watching: Manugay will next appear in court on Dec. 11 for a status conference. 

  • She faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for falsifying a report to obstruct an investigation, if convicted. 
  • Manugay also faces one year in prison and a $100,000 fine for the assault.
