The eight month partnership with Stanford is officially ending for the Visalia-based hospital.

Visalia-based Kaweah Health is ending its 8-month partnership with Stanford Medicine aimed at bringing more cardiac surgeons to the Central Valley.

The backstory: Dr. Michael McLean from Stanford Medicine was the first surgeon to join Kaweah Health as part of the partnership, with plans for two more surgeons to follow.

  • Kaweah Health and Stanford Medicine mutually agreed to terminate the contract for cardiothoracic physician services due to challenges in recruitment and retention of cardiothoracic surgeons.
  • Kaweah Health plans to begin recruiting new surgeons to work directly with the health system, involving the current cardiothoracic team in the selection process.
  • Dr. Fred Mayer will continue to provide cardiothoracic surgery care in the interim, having been involved with Kaweah Health’s cardiac and thoracic surgery program since its inception in 1996.
