West Hills Community College District officially changed the name of its two colleges on Monday.
West Hills College Coalinga has been renamed Coalinga College, and West Hills College Lemoore is now Lemoore College.
The backstory: In January the West Hills Community College District Board of Trustees approved the name changes following a public hearing in an effort to better reflect the needs of the community.
- The move puts the district in line with State Center Community College District, which has Fresno City College, Reedley College, Clovis Community College and Madera Community College.
State of play: The two colleges also adopted new slogans – “Better Tomorrows Begin Here” for Coalinga College and “Flex Your Future” for Lemoore College.
What they’re saying: “Our institutions, while they share a common goal of educational empowerment, each has unique characters that resonate with their respective student bodies and communities,” said Chancellor Kristin Clark. “The communities were in favor, voters petitioned, students and staff supported, and finally, it was approved by the board of trustees of West Hills Community College District. We’re embarking on a new era of educating our communities while honoring our distinguished legacy.”
