UC Merced to be annexed into city limits

The University of California campus will become part of Merced nearly two decades after opening.

UC Merced is finally becoming an official part of the city.

Last week the Local Agency Formation Commission of Merced County approved the annexation of the campus and the two-mile road connecting the university to Merced, which will become official after a 30-day review process.

The big picture: Merced will take around 1,040 acres that make up the campus, as well as two miles of Bellevue Road between G Street and Lake Road.

  • It’s the culmination of plans that started in 1995 when University of California regents selected Merced to host the system’s 10th campus.

What they’re saying: Merced Mayor Matthew Serratto said the annexation is pivotal in the city’s journey toward sustained economic growth and development.

  • “By bringing UC Merced within city limits, we are expanding our geographical boundaries and strengthening our community’s educational and infrastructural framework,” Serratto said. “This decision reflects our dedication to promoting efficient urban planning and delivering top-notch services to all residents.”
  • UC Merced Chancellor Juan Sanchez Munoz thanked the city for its commitment to the university.
  • “Being annexed to the city is an integral piece of the long-term strategic plans for both the university and the City of Merced,” Sanchez Munoz said. “This strengthens our partnership with the city and will enhance opportunities for students, faculty and the entire community as we build a brighter future for Merced together.”
