The Maddy institute is celebrating 25 years of its legislative internship program in Sacramento on Monday.
The Central Valley’s premier public policy institute will hold the annual fundraising event at the California Museum.
Driving the news: Former California Assembly Speaker and San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown will be the keynote speaker on Monday evening.
- A number of current legislators from the Central Valley will be in attendance: Sen. Anna Caballero (D–Merced), Sen. Melissa Hurtado (D–Bakersfield), Sen. Shannon Grove (R– Bakersfield), Asm Carlos Villapudua (D–Stockton), Asm. Devon Mathis (R–Visalia), Asm. Esmeralda Soria (D–Fresno) and Asm. Juan Alanis (R–Modesto).
- Sen. Steven Bradford (D–Gardena) and Asm. Lisa Calderon (D–Whittier) will also attend.
- Funds raised from the event will support The Maddy Institute, including the Bob Beverly Sacramento Legislative Intern Program.
- That program provides Central Valley students paid legislative internships with both parties in Sacramento.
State of play: Anyone interested in attending should register online at the event’s website.
- There are also sponsorship opportunities available, ranging from $1,000 to $10,000.
The backstory: The internship program started when the institute was created in 1999, giving over 550 students from the Central Valley opportunities in politics.
- Interns receive academic credit and a $2,400 stipend after completing at least 150 hours in the program during the semester.
- Interns are placed in a number of different offices, including Congress, the Legislature, Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Office and local city councils.
