The California State University system is requiring students, staff, and faculty of its 23 campuses to get vaccinated against the coronavirus in order to gain access to campus for the upcoming fall term, the university announced Tuesday.
While vaccine certification dates vary depending on status and campus, the university system said all vaccine certifications must be completed by Sept. 30.

“The current surge in COVID cases due to the spread of the highly infectious Delta variant is an alarming new factor that we must consider as we look to maintain the health and well-being of students, employees and visitors to our campuses this fall,” CSU Chancellor Joseph I. Castro said in a statement.
The university said that students opting to not get vaccinated, or choose to continue distance learning, will have “a more expansive offering of virtual courses as compared to before the pandemic.” But, the university notes that it does not guarantee a full slate of offerings for every student type.
The vaccine mandate does include exemptions for medical and religious reasons, the university announced.
