Elon Musk announced plans to move the flagship office of the social media platform X out of San Francisco, citing the need to relocate due to local laws and regulations affecting operations, particularly related to processing payments.
This decision comes shortly after Musk previously stated intentions to move X and his rocket company SpaceX to Texas.
The big picture: Musk said on X that it is “impossible to operate in San Francisco” in the current environment, referencing similar moves made by other companies such as Stripe and Block (CashApp) due to local laws.
- CEO Linda Yaccarino confirmed in an internal email that the offices will close in the coming weeks and that San Francisco-based employees will be relocated to the South Bay.
- X’s engineering workers will share an office with xAI, another Elon Musk-owned company, in Palo Alto, while remaining employees will be routed to existing offices in Santana Row.
