Fetterman: Newsom doesn’t have “guts to announce” challenge to Biden

The California Governor’s national tours and trip to China have invoked fury from Democrats who view it as a shadow primary to President Joe Biden.

Senator John Fetterman (D-Pa.) launches an attack on California Governor Gavin Newsom, accusing him of running a shadow primary campaign against President Biden.

Fetterman made these comments during a speech to the Iowa Democratic Party.

Driving the news: Fetterman mentioned that two other Democrats, including Governor Newsom and Representative Dean Phillips.

Newsom has repeatedly denied any plans to challenge President Biden or run for the presidency if Biden were to drop out of the race.

Newsom’s appearance on Fox News and his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping fueled speculation about his White House ambitions.

What they’re saying: “There are two additional Democrats running for Pennsylvania, excuse me, running for president right now,” Fetterman said during a speech to the Iowa Democratic Party last weekend.

  • “One is a congressman from Minnesota, the other one is the governor of California, but only one has the guts to announce it,” the Pennsylvania Democrat said, referring to Newsom and Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.).
  • GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy accused Newsom of secretly running for president and criticized his state’s track record.
