CAL FIRE employee arrested for arson

The firefighter allegedly started five fires in August and September.

A CAL FIRE employee was arrested on Friday for allegedly committing arson while he was off duty.

CAL FIRE Law Enforcement Officers arrested Robert Hernandez, 38, of Healdsburg at the Howard Forest Fire Station.

The big picture: CAL FIRE said Hernandez is suspected of starting five fires over the last two months.

  • He is accused of starting the Alexander Fire, the Windsor River Road Fire, the Geysers Fire, the Geyser Fire and the Kinley Fire from Aug. 15 to Sep. 14.
  • All five blazes ultimately did not do much damage as they burned less than an acre of wildland in total.
  • CAL FIRE said the blazes were put out quickly due to quick actions of residents and fire suppression resources.

What they’re saying: “I am appalled to learn one of our employees would violate the public’s trust and attempt to tarnish the tireless work of the 12,000 women and men of CAL FIRE,” said Director and Fire Chief Joe Tyler.
