4.4 magnitude earthquake shakes Los Angeles

There were no reported injuries from the earthquake – the second quake to strike Los Angeles in a week.

A 4.4 magnitude earthquake hit the Los Angeles Area Monday afternoon, shaking the region all the way to the U.S.-Mexico border.

The earthquake was centered near the Los Angeles neighborhood of Highland Park, 6.5 miles northeast of Los Angeles’ City Hall, and 7.5 miles below the surface, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The big picture: The quake was felt across a wide area from greater Los Angeles south to San Diego, east to the Palm Springs desert region, and there were some reports from the southern San Joaquin Valley.

  • Despite the impact, there were no major damage or injuries reported, and the quake served as a reminder of living in an earthquake-prone state.
  • The National Weather Service indicated no tsunami was expected, and the USGS downgraded the initial magnitude estimate from 4.6.

Flashback: This earthquake followed a 5.2 magnitude temblor from the previous week in southern California, also widely felt in Los Angeles but causing no injuries or major damage.
