Bird flu detected in raw milk from Fresno dairy

Raw Farm has issued a voluntary recall on the one product that bird flu was detected in.

A bird flu virus has been detected in raw milk produced at a Fresno dairy.

The California Department of Public Health has issued a warning for people to not drink one batch of cream top, whole raw milk from Raw Farm, LLC, in Fresno.

The big picture: Raw Farm has issued a voluntary recall at the state’s request for the batch of raw milk.

  • The product’s affected lot code is 20241109 with a Best By date of Nov. 27.
  • So far there have not been any reported illnesses associated with the lot of raw milk.

Zoom out: The bird flu detection took place at the County of Santa Clara Public Health Laboratory and was verified by the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System.

  • It comes amid the ongoing spread of bird flu in dairy cows and poultry, which have resulted in 29 confirmed human cases of bird flu in California.
  • There have not been any person-to-person cases detected in the country, and all cases have reported mild symptoms that have not resulted in hospitalization.

Go deeper: After bird flu was detected in the retail product, the California Department of Food and Agriculture started testing at both of Raw Farm’s locations.

  • Results were negative for bird flu from those tests.

What we’re watching: The state will begin testing for bird flu twice per week at Raw Farm’s locations.
