Californians may no longer be allowed to purchase the handgun that former Vice President Kamala Harris owns.
The California Legislature is considering a bill that will ban the sale of new Glock-brand handguns, as well as other brands which offer similar handguns.
The big picture: Assembly Bill 1127 would ban those handguns from being sold because they can become fully automatic with a converter, known as a Glock switch.
- Violators would be hit with a $1,000 fine, and multiple violations could result in their licenses being revoked.
- The bill would not affect police officers, who often use Glocks.
- Asm. Jesse Gabriel (D–Encino) authored the bill.
What we’re watching: The bill passed through the Assembly and is now being considered in the Senate.
- If AB 1127 becomes law, current Glock owners, such as Harris, would not be affected. They, and everyone else, would simply be unable to purchase another Glock in California.
Flashback: During her presidential run last year, Harris appeared on 60 minutes and told the program that she owned a Glock and had fired it.
- “I have a Glock, and I’ve had it for quite some time,” Harris told 60 Minutes journalist Bill Whitaker. “Look Bill, my background is in law enforcement, so there you go.”
- When asked if she ever fired it, Harris responded while laughing, “Yes, of course I have – at a shooting range. Yes, of course I have.”
