Mikey Keene to enter transfer portal, kicking off Fresno St. football exodus

The quarterback signaled his intent to depart Fresno State after two seasons.

Fresno State quarterback Mikey Keene plans to leave for another team next year.

Keene announced on Tuesday that he is entering the transfer portal with one year of eligibility remaining in his collegiate career.

What he’s saying: Keene made his announcement on X, thanking his parents and coaches for their support at Fresno State.

  • “To my teammates, it’s been a great ride and I wouldn’t have wanted to do it with anyone else,” Keene said. “I will always have love for every one of you guys! WIth that being said I will be entering my name into the transfer portal with one year of eligibility left.”

Driving the news: Keene leaves Fresno State after two seasons after joining the program from UCF.

  • He had a promising debut in 2023, throwing for 24 touchdowns, nearly 3,000 yards and 10 interceptions.
  • But Keene appeared to regress with the rest of the team this season, throwing for 18 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
  • He had four games that he threw 2 interceptions in, with Fresno State losing three of them.
  • But over the final six games of the season Keene was more careful with the football and only threw 3 interceptions. That includes the final two games against Colorado State and UCLA where he did not turn the ball over.

State of play: Fresno State went 14-9 with Keene as its starting quarterback over the last two years.

  • His departure adds to the uncertainty that currently surrounds Fresno State. Along with now knowing who the starting quarterback will be in 2025, the team does not know who its head coach will be heading into next season.
  • Interim head coach Tim Skipper led the team to a 6-6 record this season after taking over for former coach Jeff Tedford at the end of the summer when he stepped down for health reasons.

What we’re watching: Just because Keene is entering the transfer portal doesn’t mean that he is guaranteed to leave Fresno State.

  • NCAA rules allow players to return to their schools and withdraw their names from the transfer portal, although such instances are uncommon.
