Charlotte Douglas Airport employees go on strike

The strike coincides with the busiest travel week of the year.

Employees at Charlotte Douglas International Airport have gone on strike over wages during the busiest travel week of the year.

ABM and Prospect Airport Services employees voted to authorize the strike, which started on Monday morning.

The big picture: The strike was announced by the Service Employees International Union, demanding better wages and respect during the holiday travel season.

  • Many employees at the airport earn between $12.50 and $19 per hour, which is below a living wage for a single person without children in the area.

Zoom out: The strike comes as 795 million people are expected to travel more than 50 miles this Thanksgiving, with about 58.4 million flying domestically this week.
