California apprenticeship programs to receive nearly $25 million

Apprenticeship programs across a number of key sectors will benefit from the funding.

California is sending millions of dollars to dozens of apprenticeship programs to support thousands of apprentices.

Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the funding on Monday.

The big picture: The state will provide $24.7 million to 65 apprenticeship programs across a number of sectors, including healthcare, transportation, education, advanced manufacturing, information technology and the public sector.

  • The funding is part of the Apprenticeship Innovation Funding (AIF) program, which has allocated $135 million over three years to support and scale apprenticeship programs. California has already served 190,915 apprentices.
  • Funding would support 8,270 apprentices who earn $31.72 per hour on average.

What we’re watching: California’s overall goal is to serve 500,000 apprentices by 2029.

What they’re saying: “We’re taking a bottom-up approach to making sure Californians get the skills they need to get good-paying jobs in every region of the state,” Newsom said in a statement. “These apprenticeships represent thousands of opportunities for Californians to jump into new careers and bring in higher wages for their families.”
