A U.S. Army soldier has passed away after working on an American-built pier in Gaza.
Sgt. Quandarius Stanley died after being critically injured working to deliver humanitarian aid.
Driving the news: The injury occurred when high winds and heavy seas damaged the pier, causing four Army vessels to become beached.
- Stanley, a motor transport operator, was not injured in combat but suffered critical injuries during the project.
- Two other service members were also injured but later returned to duty.
- The pier project faced challenges due to bad weather, security issues, and safety concerns involving Israeli forces.
- Despite these obstacles, nearly 20 million pounds of aid were successfully delivered into Gaza, marking the largest volume of humanitarian assistance ever provided in the region.
- The Defense Department withdrew the pier from the Gaza shore on June 28, officially ending the mission in mid-July.
