Several students have been arrested by Fresno police in the last couple of weeks for threatening to commit school shootings.
The Fresno Police Department announced the arrests on Friday.
The big picture: The most recent arrest took place on Sep. 17, when officers took a 17-year-old student into custody for threatening to commit a shooting at Justin Garza High School.
- That followed an incident on Sep. 13 when a 13-year-old was arrested for threatening to shoot his teacher after being told to put his cell phone away. Police did not say what school that took place at.
- On Sep. 10, police arrested another 13-year-old student at Scandinavian Middle School for threatening to commit a shooting.
- Earlier in the month on Sep. 5 officers arrested a 14-year-old student for threatening to commit a shooting at Ahwahnee Middle School.
What they’re saying: “The Fresno Police Department is committed to ensuring the safety of all of our community members,” Fresno police said in a statement. “This includes the safety of our children as they attend school. We will continue to work hand in hand with all of our school district partners, quickly and diligently investigating every threat, and holding those who commit the crimes responsible for creating the needless fear.”
- The police department asks anyone who sees a social media post of a local threat to contact the department at $559) 621-7000. People are asked to not repost any threats on social media.
Driving the news: The arrests come amid a number of other threats that happened earlier this week on various social media platforms.
- Fresno police said those threats were found to be hoaxes and were not credible.
