Homeless man killed in Clovis over $40 dispute

Two homeless men were involved in an altercation at a Clovis park that left one dead.

A homeless man was killed in Clovis last week after being attacked in a dispute over $40. 

The Clovis Police Department announced Wednesday that a homeless man was killed in a Clovis park on Aug. 27. 

Driving the news: Clovis police officers responded to a report of an injured person at Bicentennial Park at Sunnyside and Sierra Avenues. 

  • They found an adult man unresponsive on the ground and transported him to a hospital for injuries to his head and face. 
  • Officers investigated and found the suspect, Adrian Mondragon, 29, who is another homeless man. 
  • Clovis police say the suspect punched the victim in the face for owing $40. 
  • Officers arrested Mondragon on Aug. 29 and booked him into the Fresno County Jail for felony assault charges. 
  • The victim, John Chandler, 52, passed away in the hospital on Aug. 30. 

What we’re watching: Clovis police said detectives are working with the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office to file all appropriate charges in the wake of Chandler’s death.
