Gary Condit announced Monday that he plans to run for Mayor of Ceres.
Ceres election records show that Condit, the eponymous grandson of the former Congressman, pulled papers to run on Tuesday.
The big picture: Condit will challenge current Mayor Javier Lopez and Ceres City Councilwoman Rosalinda Vierra for the job.
- Lopez was elected in 2020, and Vierra has been on the council since 2022.
Go deeper: Condit graduated from Ceres High School in 2019 and attended Modesto Junior College, where he graduated with an associates degree in Administration of Justice in 2021.
- He is currently working toward a bachelor’s degree in business marketing.
- While studying, Condit works as an analyst in the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office and manages a public relations and marketing business.
Family ties: The Condit name is no stranger to politics throughout Stanislaus County.
- Condit’s grandfather, also named Gary Condit, served in the House of Representatives from 1989 to 2003.
- His brother Channce Condit currently serves on the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors along with their cousin Buck Condit.
- Another brother, Cooper Condit, was elected to the Ceres City Council in 2020 but resigned after 10 months.
- His father, Chad Condit, was recently the chief of staff for Sen. Marie Alvarado-Gil (D–Jackson).
What they’re saying: Condit said in a post on Facebook that Ceres holds a special place in his life and is a thriving community.
- “However, in recent years, we’ve witnessed troubling declines in areas critical to our city’s well-being,” Condit said. “Our Ceres Police Department and Dispatch Center have faced understaffing challenges which compromise public safety, City Hall has been mired in financial mismanagement, with budgetary freezes, and irresponsible spending, and we need to enhance our city’s appearance and eliminate illegal dumping.”
- Condit said he is committed to bringing fresh and responsible leadership to City Hall.
- “I believe that local government should work for its residents, not against them,” Condit said. “My promise to you is simple: I will always be accessible, responsive, and genuinely attuned to the needs of the community. I pledge to listen more than I speak, ensuring that every decision reflects the concerns of our residents.”
