Spencer Burford sidelined for weeks with broken hand

The 49ers right guard will sit out of training camp for at least the next few weeks while he heals.

San Francisco 49ers’ right guard Spencer Burford sustained a broken right hand, which could sideline him for several weeks during training camp.

Coach Kyle Shanahan indicated that the team is contemplating whether Burford will require hand surgery, with an estimated absence of about three weeks.

The big picture: Burford, drafted in the fourth round from Texas-San Antonio in 2022, has started 29 games in his first two NFL seasons, and he shared playing time with Jon Feliciano last year.

  • With Jon Feliciano also nursing a knee injury, rookie Dominick Puni may fill in with the first-team offense, providing an opportunity for him to showcase his abilities.

State of play: Contract negotiations with stars Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams are ongoing, with Aiyuk attending meetings during his “hold in” and Williams seeking to renegotiate his deal and being fined for each day missed at camp.

  • All-Pro safety Talanoa Hufanga, who tore his ACL in November, could potentially return when the team has joint practices with New Orleans on Aug. 15-16.
