Schiff calls on Biden to drop out

Schiff is the highest-profile Democrat to call on the president to pass the torch to a younger candidate.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D–Burbank) is calling on President Joe Biden to drop out of the presidential race.

Schiff told the LA Times in an interview that he has serious concerns that Biden can win reelection against former President Donald Trump in November.

The big picture: Shiff, who is running for Senate in California against former Los Angeles Dodgers star Steve Garvey, is the most high-profile elected Democrat to call on the president to withdraw from the race.

  • He joins a number of other Democrats who have already targeted the president with fears of a Trump victory following the presidential debate last month.

What he’s saying: Schiff said in a statement to the Times that Biden has been one of the most consequential presidents in history and has made the U.S. better through his decades of service.

  • “But our nation is at a crossroads,” Schiff said. “A second Trump presidency will undermine the very foundation of our democracy, and I have serious concerns about whether the President can defeat Donald Trump in November.
  • Schiff told the paper that it is ultimately Biden’s choice to withdraw from the campaign, but he believes it is time for Biden to pass the torch.
  • He added that he will support any Democrat who runs for president, including Biden if he does not drop out.
  • “I will do everything I can to help them succeed,” Schiff said. “There is only one singular goal: defeating Donald Trump. The stakes are just too high.”
