Law enforcement officers from the Central Valley are on hand at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee this week.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced this week that 61 officers have been sent to Wisconsin through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact to support local, state and federal law enforcement partners at the convention.
The big picture: Out of the 61 total officers from California, 40 of them are members of the California Highway Patrol.
- The remaining officers are from the Bakersfield, Fresno and Long Beach police departments.
- They will be responsible for crowd management, traffic control and ensuring public safety throughout the convention.
- The state has planned to send officers to assist the convention since May.
What they’re saying: “Public safety transcends party lines,” Newsom said in a statement. “California is proud to support our law enforcement colleagues in Wisconsin during this important political event. Working together, we are helping to provide a safe and secure environment for all participants at the Republican National Convention.
- Cal OES Director Nancy Ward said it is critical for California to support its law enforcement colleagues in Wisconsin to ensure convention is safe.
- “California’s peace officers are well-trained and experienced in handling large-scale events, and we are confident in their ability to enhance the security operations in Milwaukee,” Ward said.
