A driver from La Habra, Southern California, died in a head-on collision on Highway 41 near Road 222 to Bass Lake after fleeing from Yosemite National Park rangers in a reckless driving incident.
Driving the news: The driver, who has not been identified, sped through the park gate and drove about five miles into Yosemite before turning around and speeding out of the park, leading to a pursuit by rangers and later the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
- The fatal collision occurred approximately 13 miles after rangers stopped following the driver at Fish Camp.
- CHP spokesman Joel Heckman mentioned that the Yaris driver was traveling at a high speed when he crashed into the back of a Nissan on Highway 41, causing the Yaris to overturn and collide with a northbound Chevrolet Trailblazer. The Yaris driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene.
- Four individuals in total were injured in the crash, with at least one Trailblazer occupant being taken to St. Agnes Medical Center in Fresno for treatment. The extent of injuries sustained by the Nissan driver remains unknown.
