‘Dogs fall to USD, eliminated from NCAA baseball tournament

For the first time in eight years, the Fresno State Bulldogs were not shut out in a single game this season.

The Fresno State Diamond ‘Dogs ended their 2024 season with a 7-5 loss to the University of San Diego in the Santa Barbara Regional of the NCAA tournament.

Inside the game: The Toreros took an early lead in the game with a two-run homer in the top of the first inning.

  • Eddie Saldivar got the Bulldogs’ first hit of the game with a double in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Jake Dixon had two consecutive three-up, three-down innings in the second and third.
  • The Bulldogs scored their first run of the game in the third inning when Tommy Hopfe hit a double and Murf Gray singled to bring him home.
  • San Diego extended their lead with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning and two RBI doubles in the fifth inning.
  • Fresno State cut down the deficit in the fifth inning when Murf Gray hit a home run that scored Hopfe and Saldivar. Tyler Davis scored on a Justin Stransky single.
  • San Diego extended their lead to two runs with a solo home run in the eighth inning.
  • Fresno State had a scoring opportunity in the ninth inning with back-to-back singles from Hopfe and Saldivar, but they grounded into a double play and lost the game 7-5.

Closing out the season: The Bulldogs finished the season with a 33-29 overall record.

  • This season marked the first time since 2016 that Fresno State was not shut out in any game.
