First West Nile Virus death reported in Fresno County

As mosquito activity increases, one Fresno County resident died from West Nile Virus, the Fresno County Department of Public Health announced Thursday.

West Nile Virus claimed a life in Fresno County, the Fresno County Department of Public Health announced Thursday. 

Public Health said there are 26 positive human cases of West Nile Virus this year in Fresno County, reported as of Wednesday. The department expects more reported cases throughout the year. 

The department also reported a positive Saint Louis Encephalitis virus human case in Fresno County. 

“This tragic death from West Nile Virus, and this severe illness from St. Louis Encephalitis in Fresno County are strong reminders that everyone should increase efforts to protect themselves and their families from mosquito bites,” said Dr. Ken Bird, Fresno County Deputy Health Officer, in a press release. 

“August and September are peak periods of West Nile virus transmission in Fresno County. I urge everyone to take every possible precaution to protect themselves against mosquito bites.” 

Public Health, the Fresno County Mosquito Abatement districts and the Central California Blood Center are working together to increase awareness about mosquito activity.
