Chaos at UCLA: university cancels classes after Palestinian protester violence erupts overnight

Protesters and counter-protesters fought throughout the night at UCLA until police separated the two groups early Wednesday morning.

Protests over the Israel-Hamas at UCLA turned violent overnight, with protesters and counter-protesters clashing on campus. 

UCLA canceled all classes on Wednesday in the aftermath and encouraged all students to avoid the area where the violence occurred. 

Driving the news: The clash between both sides took place on Royce Quad throughout several hours starting Tuesday night and going into the early hours of Wednesday morning. 

  • UCLA said Wednesday that police are stationed throughout campus, and Student Affairs will have essential staff on campus to support any students who have been impacted. 
  • FOX 11 reported that brawls were going on in short spurts for hours with no sign of any police presence stepping in to calm the violence. 
  • Around midnight, the UCLA Police Department requested help from the Los Angeles Police Department, and officers arrived on campus shortly before 2 a.m. Wednesday. 

Go deeper: At certain points throughout the night, protester and counter-protesters were kicking and beating each other with sticks, while at another point firecrackers were thrown at an encampment. 

  • The Associated Press reported that the meles started after pro-Israel supporters tried to pull down barricades surrounding a pro-Palestinian encampment.
