Xavier Worthy selected by Chiefs in first round

The Central High alum found stardom in Texas and became a first round draft pick on Thursday.

Fresno native Xavier Worthy is headed to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Worthy, who graduated from Central East High School in 2020, was selected by the Chiefs in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft on Thursday.

Driving the news: Kansas City traded up from the 32nd pick to snag Worthy, striking a deal with the Buffalo Bills to move up to the 28th overall pick.

  • Worthy set the all-time record in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine earlier this year with a time of 4.21 seconds.
  • Worthy will now team up with Patrick Mahomes, giving the Chiefs a speed threat that they have missed since trading Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins.

Go deeper: After receiving scholarship offers from a number of top programs, Worthy chose to attend the University of Texas, where he starred for three years before giving up his final year of eligibility to declare for the NFL Draft.

  • Worthy had 2,755 receiving yards in his collegiate career and caught 26 touchdowns.
  • He helped lead Texas to the College Football Playoff last season, where the Longhorns lost in the semifinal to Washington.
