Avenal to conduct walk audit to improve pedestrian safety

The Kings County city is inviting the public to join in on Wednesday.

Avenal will be holding its first-ever “walk audit” to analyze the pedestrian walking experience to promote walkability and safety.

The city is hosting the walk audit to prepare to apply for state funding for transportation projects.

The big picture: Avenal will conduct the walk audit on Wednesday at 10 a.m. along 5th Ave., starting at the north side of Skyline Blvd. and ending at Neighborhood Park.

  • Participants will observe, experience and document the pedestrian environment along the quarter-mile stretch, studying sidewalk conditions, shade coverage, crosswalk safety, signage and ADA accessibility.
  • The city will collect the feedback for the planning and development efforts to enhance pedestrian safety and comfort.
  • Avenal has contracted with A&M Consulting Engineers as it prepares to apply for funding through the Active Transportation Program to prioritize the needs and safety concerns for pedestrians and cyclists.

What they’re saying: “A walk audit is an essential tool used to assess the conditions of pedestrian infrastructure, identify safety concerns, and explore potential enhancements to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment,” the city said in a statement. “City officials will gather input from participants with diverse perspectives, including residents, local business owners, community organizations, and officials.”
