Tulare native Mizner wins Oscar for ’20 Days in Mariupol’ documentary

Michelle Mizner took home an Oscar on Sunday for working on the documentary showing the early days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Tulare native Michelle Mizner was awarded an Oscar on Sunday for her work on 20 Days in Mariupol. 

The Tulare Union High School graduate was a producer and editor on the documentary. 

Driving the news: “20 Days in Mariupol,” produced by The Associated Press and PBS’ “Frontline,” was recognized as the best documentary. 

  • Mystyslav Chernov’s documentary debuted at the Sundance Film Festival and also was awarded as the best documentary from the Directors Guild and BAFTA. 
  • It showed footage from the early part of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 in Mariupol. 
  • “20 Days in Mariupol” won the Oscar over “Four Daughters,” “The Eternal Memory,” “Bobi Wine: The People’s President” and “To Kill a Tiger.”
