Asm. Vince Fong (R–Bakersfield) and Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux will head to the general election barring a major influx of ballots over the next month.
The two Republicans secured their leads overnight as the latest results came in early Wednesday morning.
The big picture: Fong is at 38.7 percent in the latest results, firmly cementing himself in first place in the primary.
- Boudreaux took steps to join Fong in the November election with 24.9 percent of the vote.
- That gives him a wider margin than he had late Tuesday night over Democrat Marisa Wood. Boudreaux only had a 1,500 vote lead over Wood, but now has over a 2,300 vote lead as Wood is at 21.7 percent.
- Similar to late Tuesday night, no other candidate grabbed five percent of the vote, with Kyle Kirkland coming closest at 4.4 percent.
What they’re saying: Fong released a statement on Wednesday saying he is humbled to have a commanding lead in the race.
- “While there are still many ballots to count, voters have sent a clear message tonight that they are ready for experienced, trusted leadership in Washington D.C. Throughout my years in public service, I have delivered results for the Central Valley,” Fong said. “In Congress, I will continue to fight to secure the border, to fund water infrastructure, and to protect local energy producers. That message is clearly resonating as Central Valley voters demand meaningful solutions.”
