California Senate race for second tightens up

New polling shows a close battle between Steve Garvey and Rep. Katie Porter for second place behind Rep. Adam Schiff.

The latest poll in the California Senate Race shows Rep. Katie Porter (D–Irvine) getting closer to second place.

Inside California Politics and Nexstar released the latest poll on Thursday, less than one week until the election.

By the numbers: Rep. Adam Schiff (D–Burbank) continues to hold a lead in first place with 28 percent support.

  • Former Major League Baseball star Steve Garvey has surged in the polls this year and remains in second place at 20 percent.
  • But Porter has gained ground and now comes in close to Garvey at 17 percent.
  • Another 17 percent of the electorate remains undecided, according to the poll, but 32 percent of those undecided voters lean toward Schiff. Garvey has favor among 22 percent of undecided voters, while 20 percent of them lean toward Porter.
  • Democrats support Schiff at a 47 percent clip, and he holds a lead among independents at 27 percent.
  • Voters under the age of 30 support Porter at a 25 percent rate, but Rep. Barbara Lee (D–Oakland) and Schiff are not far behind at 21 percent and 20 percent, respectively.

What they’re saying: “Both Garvey and Porter are within the poll’s margin of error for second place in a race where a top-two finish would place them on the ballot in November,” said Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling.”

  • Kimball said that 47 percent of people who have already voted supported Schiff, 19 percent for Porter, 18 percent for Garvey and 10 percent for Lee.
  • Voters who have not yet submitted their ballots but are likely to do so support Schiff at a 30 percent rate, 23 percent for Garvey and 20 percent for Porter.
