Carl Weathers dead at 76

The former Oakland Raider found a career in Hollywood after his playing days were over.

Carl Weathers, who achieved fame as Apollo Creed in the first four “Rocky” films and more recently for his role as Greef Karga in “The Mandalorian,” has died at the age of 76.

Driving the news: Weathers was also known for his roles in “Predator” and “Happy Gilmore” and received an Emmy nomination for his work in “The Mandalorian.”

  • In addition, Weathers voiced Combat Carl in “Toy Story 4” and had a recurring role in “Arrested Development.”
  • Before turning to acting, Weathers played football in college and professionally with the Oakland Raiders.
  • Weathers refused to allow footage of his earlier “Rocky” films to be used in the franchise’s sixth movie and lobbied for a role instead. Though this was unsuccessful, he later allowed his likeness to be used in the “Creed” sequel.
  • Weathers is survived by his ex-wife and their two sons.
