California ranks as top state for LGBTQ population

The Golden state has around half a million more LGBTQ people than the next-highest state.

California has the largest number of LGBTQ Americans, followed by Texas, Florida, New York, and Pennsylvania.

The data comes from a study by the Williams Institute at UCLA. 

Driving the news: According to the study, around 13.9 million people – 5.5 percent of U.S. adults – identify as LGBTQ. 

  • California has over 1.5 million LGBTQ people, with texas being the only other state to top one million. 
  • Washington, D.C. has the highest percentage of LGBTQ residents, with about 14.3% of the population identifying as LGBTQ.
  • Other states with high LGBTQ populations include Oregon, Delaware, Vermont, and New Hampshire.
  • The South has the largest share of LGBTQ adults compared to other regions, with nearly 36% of LGBTQ Americans residing there.
  • The Midwest and Northeast regions also have significant proportions of LGBTQ residents, with 21.1% and 18.5% respectively. 
  • Young adults aged 18 to 24 make up the largest share of LGBTQ Americans, at 15.2%.
  • The percentage of people identifying as LGBTQ decreases with age, with only about 1.8% of those 65 and older identifying as LGBTQ.
