Hanford appoints interim fire chief

Interim Chief Nevarez brings decades of experience from time with the Tulare Fire Department.

Former Tulare Fire Chief Luis Nevarez has taken over as Hanford’s interim Fire Chief.

The move comes after Steve Pendergrass decided to leave the department.

Driving the news: The City of Hanford selected Nevarez to fill in as the interim chief while the hunt for a permanent chief begins.

  • Pendergrass left Hanford to move to Millbank, South Dakota, where he accepted a job as a City Administrator.
  • Nevarez joined the Tulare Fire Department in 1989 and retired as the Fire Chief in 2021.
  • He also teaches at the College of the Sequoias and Porterville College.
