Don Arax removed as Bullard High football coach

Fresno Unified declined to provide a reason for his removal.

Longtime Bullard High School Head Football Coach Don Arax has been removed from leading the team.

Arax, who was with the team for 28 years, still holds his teaching position at the school.

The big picture: In a statement to The Sun, Fresno Unified School District clarified that Arax is still employed by Bullard High School as a teacher despite being removed as head coach.

  • FUSD said it cannot provide details on personnel matters, declining to say why Arax was released from his role.
  • Athletic Director and former defensive coordinator Brandon Gilbert will take over the team as interim head coach.
  • Bullard has had a rough start to the 2023 season with a 1-4 record.
  • Last year Araz filed a defamation lawsuit against Fresno Unified Trustee Keshia Thomas after she accused Arax of making racial slurs in front of her son during a football practice.

What they’re saying: “The Bullard Knights Football Team will move forward with Athletic Director Brandon Gilbert serving as interim head coach,” FUSD said in a statement. “Gilbert has previously spent years serving as the team’s defensive coordinator, and we know the players and coaching staff will be in good hands.”
