McCarthy trains fire at Biden amid Calif. GOP victory lap

Speaker Kevin McCarthy addressed the California Republican Party for the first time since winning the gavel in January.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s return to a California Republican Party convention was a homecoming of sorts, with fellow California GOPers offering roaring praise for the favorite son who recently captured the House gavel.

McCarthy keynoted Saturday’s proceedings of the California GOP’s organizing convention in Sacramento.

Driving the news: McCarthy was on the receiving end of plaudits from the state GOP’s ardent conservative activists in attendance, receiving standing ovations during his speech.

  • Much of his talk focused on perhaps the top issue facing the Republican-led House: how best to deal with President Joe Biden ahead of a prospective hike on the debt ceiling.
  • During the address, McCarthy reiterated that he would not bring a clean debt ceiling bill – one that included no spending cuts – to the floor of the House, nor would he pursue tax increases.

What he’s saying: “If you want to cut spending, if you want to find savings for the American public, I’m all ears,” McCarthy said, challenging Biden over looming debt ceiling and budget negotiations.
