Amalgamated Transit Union 1027 and City of Fresno Professional Employees Association endorse Whelan for District 7

The Amalgamated Transit Union 1027 is endorsing Brian Whelan for Fresno City Council in District 7.

The union represents transportation workers at Fresno Area Express, the city’s public transit system.

“I am very grateful to have the support of Fresno’s hardworking transit workers,” Whelan said. “Connecting Fresnans to their city is a critical task. Each day, they get my neighbors to work and school safely and on time.”

The union is the first of the city’s unions to make an endorsement in District 7.

ATU President Al Munoz hailed Whelan as the leader needed to succeed incumbent Clint Olivier, who is termed out in January.

“Brian is committed to making Fresno a better city and continuing the streak of success by investing in our city’s infrastructure and employees,” Munoz said. “With the unveiling of the Bus Rapid Transit, Brian is the best possible partner on the City Council to make Fresno’s future bright.”

Whelan, a small businessman and attorney, announced his candidacy in January. He is also endorsed by Fresno Mayor Lee Brand and Olivier.

District 7 is in Central Fresno. Also running for the seat are Nelson Esparza and Veva Islas.

UPDATE:

A couple of days after landing the ATU 1027 endorsement, Whelan snagged the endorsement of the City of Fresno Professional Employees Association.

The CFPEA represents the City of Fresno’s professional employees.

Said CFPEA President Jesse Gonzalez: “Brian has lived in District 7 for nearly a decade and is the only candidate who truly understands the needs of his neighbors. Brian’s background and experience make him the best-equipped candidate to work with our citizens to make Fresno a stronger, safer city.”

Said Whelan: “The incredible support I’ve received from our City workers is a clear-cut sign that we have the momentum. I’m humbled to have the support of our hardworking City employees and my neighbors.”
