Waymo to expand service to Las Vegas, San Diego, Detroit

Alphabet’s Waymo plans its largest robotaxi rollout yet, introducing new Zeekr vehicles alongside existing fleets as it broadens service coverage.

Waymo announced it will launch its robotaxi service in Las Vegas, San Diego and Detroit next year, marking its biggest geographic expansion.

The company will begin deploying new Zeekr-built vehicles this week in addition to its current Jaguar I-PACE fleet.

Driving the news: Zeekr vehicles, developed with Chinese automaker Geely, are designed specifically for robotaxi operations and will roll out gradually.

  • Waymo currently operates in Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Austin, with over 10 million completed trips.

What we’re watching: The Las Vegas launch is planned for next summer.

  • In San Diego, Waymo is collaborating with local officials and first responders to obtain deployment permits.
  • Detroit’s robotaxi rollout follows successful winter-weather testing in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, proving the system’s year-round capability. Detroit is also home to Waymo’s long-standing engineering operations.
