Walmart is closing its 51 health centers and virtual care service due to an unsustainable business model.
The retail giant launched its health centers five years ago with the goal of helping people save money on healthcare needs.
Driving the news: Walmart said Tuesday that there is not a sustainable business model with the health centers to continue forward.
- The decision comes after Walmart’s previous announcement to add more than two dozen health centers to its stores in 2024, mostly in Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, and Kansas City.
- Specific closure dates for the health centers have not been provided yet, but employees are eligible to transfer to other Walmart or Sam’s Club locations.
- Despite the closure of health centers, Walmart still operates almost 4,600 pharmacies and over 3,000 vision centers in the United States.
