Walmart is testing body cameras for some in-store employees as part of a pilot program.
The program is in early stages and currently being tested in one market, with employees in at least one Denton, Texas location seen wearing the cameras, according to CNBC.
The big picture: The decision to test the body cameras on employees was not specifically linked to theft or employee safety.
- Walmart will evaluate the results of the pilot program before making long-term decisions.
Driving the news: Other retailers like TJ Maxx have also introduced body cameras for specially-trained loss prevention employees to de-escalate incidents and deter crime.
- Walmart had also tested new technology to allow employees to unlock security cases without manually using keys to prevent shoplifting.
What they’re saying: “While we don’t talk about the specifics of our security measures, we are always looking at new and innovative technology used across the retail industry,” Walmart said in a statement.
