Tulsi Gabbard endorses Trump

The former Democratic Congresswoman threw her support behind Trump on Monday.

Former Democratic Representative Tulsi Gabbard has endorsed Donald Trump for the presidency.

This endorsement represents a significant shift for Gabbard, who previously served as a four-term Democrat representative for Hawaii in the US House.

Driving the news: According to Gabbard, she is supporting Trump because he understands the grave responsibility that a president and commander in chief bears for every single one of their citizens’ lives.

  • Gabbard appeared at a campaign event with Trump in Detroit on Monday.

Go deeper: Gabbard also praised Trump for “having the courage to meet with adversaries, dictators, allies, and partners alike in the pursuit of peace, seeing war as a last resort.”

  • She condemned the Democratic White House for the U.S. now “facing multiple wars on multiple fronts in regions around the world and closer to the brink of nuclear war than we ever have been before.”

Zoom out: Gabbard’s endorsement of Trump aligns with her history of taking positions contrary to her party’s establishment during her time as a representative.

  • During her tenure, she was the only lawmaker to vote “present” when the House of Representatives impeached Trump for his dealings with Ukraine.
  • Gabbard endorsed Biden initially but became an independent two years later, claiming that the Democratic Party was dominated by an elitist cabal of warmongers and “woke” ideologues.
  • She has campaigned for several high-profile Republicans, become a contributor to Fox News, and started a podcast since then.
