More than 3 million travelers were screened at US airports in a single day, setting a new record.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) handled 3.09 million travelers on this record-breaking day, surpassing the previous record by about 74,000 travelers.
The big picture: The record was set on Sunday, following the Thanksgiving holiday, with hundreds of thousands of travelers experiencing delays or flight cancellations.
- The TSA had predicted a 6% increase in Thanksgiving week air travel compared to the previous year, continuing the trend of record travel in 2024.
Zoom out: Airlines canceled about 120 U.S. flights, and over 6,800 flights were delayed according to FlightAware.
- The highest number of delays occurred at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.
