Trump taps Whitaker as NATO ambassador

The former acting Attorney General will represent the United States with the nation’s allies.

Former acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker has been chosen by Donald Trump to serve as the U.S. ambassador to NATO, a significant appointment given Trump’s historical skepticism about the alliance.

Trump emphasized Whitaker’s qualities of being a “strong warrior and loyal Patriot” who will advance and defend U.S. interests while strengthening relationships with NATO allies and maintaining peace and stability.

Driving the news: Whitaker’s nomination to represent the U.S. at NATO is unconventional due to his legal background rather than experience in foreign policy.

What they’re saying: In his statement, Trump expressed confidence in Whitaker’s abilities to fulfill the ambassadorial role effectively and navigate the complexities of international relations within the scope of NATO.

  • “Matt is a strong warrior and loyal Patriot, who will ensure the United States’ interests are advanced and defended,” Trump wrote in a statement. “Matt will strengthen relationships with our NATO Allies, and stand firm in the face of threats to Peace and Stability – He will put AMERICA FIRST.”
  • Trump continued, “I have full confidence in Matt’s ability to represent the United States with Strength, Integrity, and unwavering Dedication. I look forward to working closely with him as we continue to promote PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH, Freedom, and Prosperity around the world.”
