Trump names Susie Wiles as next chief of staff

Wiles oversaw Trump’s victory in the election and will now move with him to Washington D.C.

President-elect Donald Trump has named Susie Wiles, his campaign manager, as his White House chief of staff.

Wiles will be the first woman to ever hold the influential role.

Driving the news: Wiles is recognized for running a disciplined and well-executed campaign, earning praise for helping control Trump’s impulses by earning his respect and showing him the benefits of following her advice.

What they’re saying: “Susie is tough, smart, innovative, and is universally admired and respected. Susie will continue to work tirelessly to Make America Great Again,” said Trump in a statement. “It is a well deserved honor to have Susie as the first-ever female Chief of Staff in United States history. I have no doubt that she will make our country proud.”

Why it matters: White House chiefs of staff play a crucial role in assisting the president by executing the agenda, managing political and policy priorities, acting as confidants and serving as gatekeepers for the president’s time and interactions.

  • Wiles, a seasoned Republican strategist from Florida, previously managed Trump’s campaigns in Florida in 2016 and 2020, as well as contributing to other political campaigns such as Rick Scott’s 2010 campaign and Jon Huntsman’s 2012 presidential campaign.

Flashback: Four people served as Chief of Staff throughout Trump’s first term in the White House: Reince Priebus, John Kelly, Mick Mulvaney and Mark Meadows.
