Target will not carry Pride Month merchandise at all of its stores in June following backlash and lower sales over its collection promoting LGBTQ communities.
The decision about where to stock Pride-themed products will be based on “guest insights and consumer research,” and will not be available in all stores, Target said in a statement.
The big picture: While the Pride-themed products will not be in every store, all products will be offered online.
- Last year, Target faced backlash and made changes to its LGBTQ+ merchandise after intense customer reaction, including confrontations with workers and tipped over displays, leading to a second backlash for its reaction to anti-LGBTQ activism sweeping through Republican state legislatures.
What they’re saying: “Target is committed to supporting the LGBTQIA+ community during Pride Month and year-round,” Target said in a statement. “Most importantly, we want to create a welcoming and supportive environment for our LGBTQIA+ team members, which reflects our culture of care for the over 400,000 people who work at Target.”
