Spirit Airlines launches new ticket packages

The budget airline is moving away from its fee-heavy history.

Spirit Airlines is transitioning away from being a fee-heavy budget airline and will begin offering fares that include popular extras bundled together.

The airline’s new “Go Big” package will feature priority check-in, a more spacious seat, snacks and drinks, a checked bag, a carry-on bag, and free WiFi.

The big picture: CEO Ted Christie described the changes as taking low-fare travel to new heights, reflecting a shift from the airline’s traditional model.

  • Spirit Airlines has not turned a profit since 2019, facing financial challenges totaling approximately $2.4 billion, which has raised concerns about potential bankruptcy.
  • Competition from full-service carriers like Delta and United has impacted the budget airline’s profitability, as they emphasize premium flyers and budget-friendly basic economy fares.

State of play: In response to industry shifts, budget carriers like Frontier Airlines are adapting by eliminating flight-change and cancellation fees for many customers.

  • Spirit Airlines faces challenges such as looming debt payments exceeding $1 billion and a shortage of planes due to engine inspections and repairs, prompting furloughs and delayed aircraft deliveries.
  • The airline announced the launch of four new ticket bundles on August 16 to cater to travelers seeking an elevated experience at an affordable cost, aimed at expanding the customer base beyond traditional budget airline passengers.
